Dianthus, the botanical name for the Carnation flower has Greek origins, meaning divine flower. Greek mythology tells of the Goddess Artemis who in anger, tore out the eyes of a shepherd when he startled her. Later regretting her actions, Carnations replaced his eyes with Carnations.

Early Christians believed that carnations bloomed on the ground when the Virgin Mary wept at the crucifixion. Much religious art has featured carnations, especially when depicting Mary. It is no surprise that in modern culture, carnations are a symbol of motherhood.

In the middle ages Carnations became a symbol of fidelity and marital love. Carnations were often given to the new couple at weddings. Again, art plays a role in revealing meaning as many paintings from the era of weddings depict carnations.

For almost forty years Anna Jarvis campaigned for a day of the year to give respect to Mothers and the hard work they do. To raise awareness to her cause she gave out hundreds of white carnations, symbolizing the pure love a mother provides. In 1912 her dream became a reality and the first ever Mother’s Day was held.

Carnations are a great gift for a mother. Send white carnations to a mother-to-be. Pink carnations are said to represent the endless love a mother ahs for her child. Red and white carnations are popular on Mother’s Day.

While carnations are native to Europe and Africa they grow surprisingly well in Australian conditions. They have been grown as a commercial crop since 1954.
