Leucadendrons belong to the Proteaceae family, they are native to both South Africa and Australia, like many other genus in this family. There are about 80 species in existence. Growing to a medium to large size, these dense shrubs are popular in ornamental gardens. They are tough plants, they love warm conditions and will tolerate the dry Australian climate.

In the garden, Leucadendron are perfect for those who are looking for a low maintenance plant. They don’t like to be watered and do fine without mulch or fertilizer. A good pruning before winter will help them to keep their shape and bring more blooms the following spring.

One of the most popular species is Safari Sunset. This plant has beautiful foliage which is often used, along with the blooms, in floral arrangements. It can be found in many a native garden complemented by native grasses and other plants.

Many species spread their pollen through birds and bees, however some have been known to be pollinated with ants and even rats. Some species can only regenerate after a bushfire, the extreme heat casing the woody pod holding the Leucadendron seeds to pop.

Leucadendrons in your garden will attract bird life, especially in the warmer months with the flowers are in bloom.

Leucadendron blooms are smaller in size compared to others in the Proteaceae family. The petals are often narrow with a spiked edges. They make a fine choice for cut flowers and look perfect in a simple arrangement surrounded by their own foliage.

As one of the smaller and less extravagant members of the Protea family, the Leucadendron symbolizes simple beauty. Perhaps there is someone in your life who is a natural beauty without artifice, why not compliment them with an arrangement featuring Leucadendron?
