They saw the lily as symbol of joy and abundance and associated it with Juno, the goddess of motherhood. Christian society assigned the lily a different meaning. They associated the white lily with the Virgin Mary. The lily became a symbol of purity, radiance and virginity.
White lilies are sometimes spotted at funerals. Their white colour and simple formation of petals refers to the fact that innocence is restored after death and that sins are washed away.
In modern times the lily has become associated with female sexuality and freedom. Essentially, across all cultures the lily has been associated with feminine qualities.
